A Multigrid Approach to the 1-D Quantization Problem

چکیده
Abstract— A multigrid framework for the 1-D (scalar) quantization problem is presented. The framework is based on the Lloyd-Max iterative process, which is a central building block in many quantization algorithms. This process iteratively improves a given initial solution and generally converges to a local minimum of the quantization distortion. Contrary to the classical Lloyd-Max process, the convergence of the multigrid algorithm is practically independent of the number of representation levels sought. Using this approach, a local minimum with machine accuracy is reached in a matter of several iterations and the need for traditional stopping criteria for the process is alleviated. In addition, the proposed method often achieves better local minima than other quantization methods such as classical Lloyd-Max and LBG. The complexity of the proposed method is O(n) operations for the continuous case and 3N + O(n) for the discrete case, where n is the number of representation levels sought and N is the size of the discrete probability density function.

Review of Methods Inspired by Algebraic-Multigrid for Data and Image Analysis Applications
Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) methods were developed originally for numerically solving Partial Differential Equations (PDE), not necessarily on structured grids. In the last two decades solvers inspired by the AMG approach, were developed for non PDE problems, including data and image analysis problems, such as clustering, segmentation, quantization and others. These solvers share a common princip...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Full Isoparametric Multigrid Algorithm for a Second Order Elliptic Problem
A second order elliptic problem is investigated in domains with complex geometry. The sequence of nonnested finite element triangulations is generated by higher order curved elements. Convergence analysis of the full nonnested multigrid algorithm is done on the basis of a pure isoparametric approach. A numerical example supporting the considered theory is presented.
متن کاملTime-Mode Signal Quantization for Use in Sigma-Delta Modulators
The rapid scaling in modern CMOS technology has motivated the researchers to design new analog-to-digital converter (ADC) architectures that can properly work in lower supply voltage. An exchanging the data quantization procedure from the amplitude to the time domain, can be a promising alternative well adapt with the technology scaling. This paper is going to review the recent development in t...
متن کاملFinding the Optimal Place of Sensors for a 3-D Damped Wave Equation by using Measure Approach
In this paper, we model and solve the problem of optimal shaping and placing to put sensors for a 3-D wave equation with constant damping in a bounded open connected subset of 3-dimensional space. The place of sensor is modeled by a subdomain of this region of a given measure. By using an approach based on the embedding process, first, the system is formulated in variational form;...
متن کاملConvergence of Calculated Features in Image Analysis
This paper informs about number-theoretical and geometrical estimates of worst-case bounds for quantization errors in calculating features such as moments, moment based features, or perimeters in image analysis, and about probability-theoretical estimates of error bounds (eg. Standard derivations) for such digital approximations. New estimates (with proofs) and a review of previously known resu...
